Nvidia Moves to Enclose the Entire AI Stack
Within a single news cycle Nvidia has advanced on three distinct vectors: a potential $14 billion acquisition of Hugging Face — the neutral commons on which every major AI lab and enterprise user depends for model distribution — a $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek with NVLink Fusion adoption baked in, and a Hot Chips presentation embedding RISC-V into its CUDA and NVLink ecosystem. Each move individually would be significant. Together they constitute a deliberate multi-layer enclosure: hardware dominance, custom silicon interconnect standardisation, and now potential control of the open-source model distribution platform.
The practical consequences extend across the AI supply chain. Cloud providers — AWS, Azure, Google Cloud — depend on Hugging Face as a neutral third-party ecosystem; an Nvidia-owned platform creates legitimate questions about preferential CUDA optimisation and hardware-agnostic neutrality. For sovereign compute programmes and hyperscalers designing custom silicon, NVLink Fusion adoption by MediaTek sets a precedent that could make Nvidia's interconnect the global default for custom AI accelerators, analogous to CUDA's lock-in of software developers. Infrastructure planners should now model the scenario in which opting out of Nvidia's ecosystem becomes progressively more expensive as these layers integrate — and antitrust bodies in both the U.S. and EU should be expected to scrutinise the Hugging Face deal closely.
